As you know, my first short story comes out next week! As you can imagine, I’m beyond excited! This is my first big step to being a writer. Since fifth grade I’ve had that dream, and now I’m beginning to walk in it. I know that landing a short story in a magazine with 600 active subscribers is a far cry from the New York Times best seller list, but it’s the furthest I’ve ever been. And to me, it’s the end of a diving board, and I’m just learning how to swim.
Something I’m not very good at is giving myself a deadline. If I have a timetable setup, I’ll get the job done. I can get pretty clutch when the minutes are ticking down. But left to myself, it doesn’t always work out. I’ve heard a speaker say he began to schedule time in his calendar to go to Starbucks, or lock himself in a room to make time to write. I’m working on giving myself hard deadlines to finish projects and get some rough drafts written. One such project was a 24-hour writing contest I entered.
“I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old.” Psalm 78:2
If you take a step back and look at entertainment, its pretty obvious that people crave a good story. Sometimes, we even crave a bad story. I for one love anything that can keep my focus. But why? What is it about leaving our reality and taking a snippet from someone else’s that will cause us to stay up late to read one more chapter, watch one more episode and obsess about movie trailers?
A term that I’ve learned of recently sums up all the things that I like to write: Speculative Fiction. Google tells me that Speculative Fiction is a broad literary genre encompassing any fiction with supernatural, fantastical, or futuristic elements. Over the past few months I’ve submitted some of my short stories to a couple different magazines. One of those magazines is called Splickety.
Life is here. It happens everyday. Some nights I go to bed early, I mean before 10:00 early. Some nights I’m up past midnight. Some days I work, some days I play. Most days I should be working on my school work. But every day, through all of those events, life happens.
I’ve started and stopped this blog more times than I can remember, but in this stage of life, I need to write.
